Kings Rd Primary Sch, Fete - Saturday 19th June 2004

Kings Road Primary School – Saturday 19th June 2004

After such a positive display last week at Braintree, the team was charged up and raring to go again. Receiving such a warm welcome from our hosts always makes for a good start to any display and the welcome here was no exception.

A run through of the demo vaults caught the audience’s attention, especially as Tom and James demonstrated their vaults and ‘personalised’ landings in turn by coming off either side of the mat with full grins.

Despite a bit of a breeze the hoops of fire came out and all vaulters performed open, tucked and double somersaults well above the danger zone. In Fast Hocus all double deckers were timed very well with a few close enough to cause a lady in the crowd to hide behind her hands. If she thought that was scary she was going to have kittens by the end of the programme! In the laying gymnast element Gareth sporting his Sonic the Hedgehog goes Punk hairstyle stood at the buck for Ed to somersault over with plenty of room. Well would you fancy landing on one of those spikes? And Aaron turned a neat one and a half tucked somersault over Vinnie.

The pyramid teetered precariously as vaulters from both groups straddled it, but managed to hold together for the duration. This was followed by a good variation of somersaults from both groups on the 1 –2 section. As the routine came to its close the long group brought both excellent height and distance over the five standing gymnasts. (At this point the lady in the crowd had no option but to take her hands away from her face to applaud enthusiastically.)

After a short warm up The Fledglings routine got under way with the long group’s bomb burst of roll on pin jumps off. During the course of the routine there were some very good, neat necksprings from Hollie, Amy, Danni, Will, Adam and Shaun, but once again there were the occasional stumbles from the short groups on their pin jumps, which sadly takes the edge off of the whole routine.

Even with the lady in the audience getting into the spirit of things, clapping and cheering, Gary missed the egg on his first vault. On his second and final vault the egg rolled away sidewards only to be caught securely by Alun making sure it was completely smashed.

The first section of L for Leather ran exceptionally smoothly with only one pin jump! Brad and Vinnie opened the doubles section with slightly mistimed longarms over the tables but perfectly synchronised somersaults on the mats. Of all the doubles I think the award for perfect timing and vault has to go to Ed and Matt who were absolutely spot on with their longarms. There were some great somersaults over the kneelers from both sides including Vinnie’s double tucked, Tom’s very neat half twist, Gareth’s slap into open, Martin’s sky high 8ft longarm, Ed’s full twist, Greg’s tucked somersault and Jess Wright’s superb high dive. Some of the double deckers went slightly awry but those that weren’t looked excellent. The ever-increasing height of the pyramids posed no problems for the vaulters as they heightened their vaults too, clearing both pyramids faultlessly. As a slight adjustment to the ending we had a single file bomb burst over the ‘long long’ table to bring the routine to a satisfactory ending.

The hoops of fire made their return for the start of Gemini despite it getting slightly windier. Fortunately no-one came away wearing hot pants. The long group produced some excellent mirror vaults from Brad and Gareth – open somersaults, Owen and Vinnie – shortarms, Tom and James – tucked somersaults, Aaron and Ryan – biranis, Ed and Martin – open somersaults and Steve and Matt – longarms. The vaults over the kneelers were neat, energetic and in some cases, exceptionally high. In the trick section Owen did a late drop to kneel for Brad, Gareth, Vinnie and James dropped (eventually) for Aaron’s full distance tucked somersault, Kevin’s unmistakeable back somersault off of the table and Ed’s brave belly flop onto the table finished off with a backward twisting flop onto the mat. Steve once again got pushed off of the table by Gary who then raised Michael up onto his shoulders. Over the pyramids it was a case of blink and you missed it as Kevin performed a very tidy through vault over the top. A rapid variation of pin jumps, dives and necksprings in the short group bomb burst set the pace for the long groups’ burst of vaults. By now the lady in the crowd was thoroughly enjoying the afternoon’s entertainment and was probably one of the first to rush to the other end of the arena for the best view of the minibus vaults. These were initiated with Owen – open with half twist, followed by Ryan – tucked, Greg – tucked, Jason – longarm, Kevin – longarm, Dave – slap somersault, Brad – tucked, congratulations to Marcus on his maiden flight/ clamber up and pin jump off, Matt – longarm, Chris – longarm, Steve – tucked, Tom – half twisting somersault, Ed – open, Gareth – open, Vinnie – tucked, James – full twister, Aaron – open and Gary – neckspring.

And if that hadn’t been exciting enough, Owen, Brad and Ed demonstrated their prowess at walking, or in Ed’s case running, on their hands across the length of the minibus. And still not content with that Owen and Brad tried their luck even further by attempting to longarm the minibus lengthways. Unfortunately the challenge proved a little too much and the nearest they came were swift longarms to the middle, a quick run on their hands before rolling off at the other end. The crowd didn’t seem to mind how they got across as they, (and especially the lady in the crowd), had had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.
